Day 60 - A Few More Christmas Container Ideas

My co-worker Yelena Petruk worked her magic on these containers to get them Christmas-y and festive.
Also check out Rita Randolph's website for great ideas for indoor containers with poinsettias and Cyclamen and her fabulous "Rita's Gold" fern. You may can find her picture on her facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?id=1575810379&v=wall

Day 59 - A Bird in the Bush is Worth....

... a simply elegant Christmas decoration. Red Twig Dogwood, Black Mondo grass, Wintercreeper, ivy, and Goshiki False Holly make a striking container on their own. Add a white turtle dove and you're ready for Christmas.

A closer look at this container a year earlier.

Day 58 - Christmas Tree Containers

Dwarf Blue Alberta Spruce make great winter containers - evergreen and Christmas tree-like, they carry you through until spring with little need for extras other than dwarf acorus grass and pansies.

Day 57 - What Lies Behind It

Sunset Glow Bamboo (Fargesia rufa), Chamaecyparis Sungold, Sedum Voodoo, and Sunny Delight Boxwood Euonomous are the winter choice for these column pots.

I really like these funky containers but what really grabs my attention this month when I took the photo was the Pink Muhly grass Muhlenbergia capillaris growing behind (actually to the side) of this planter.

Day 55 - Happy Thanksgiving!!

My clever sister-in-law, married to my farmer brother, picked some of this cotton for a fun turkey container for our annual feast down on the farm.
Hope your day was as full of blessing as mine!

Day 53 - I Do Love Winter Containers!

One of the benefits of planting winter containers is that you can often combine plant material in a planter that would not thrive well together during the spring and summer. In this planting I have Camellia Yuletide (a shade/part sun shrub), Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow (a full sun plant), Heuchera Electic Lime and Heucherella Golden Zebra (both part sun plants), and Pansy Matrix Ocean (full sun annual). On this protected West face porch, these plants get enough sun to flower and color up well but the camellias are protected from wind and morning sun that often will burn frost covered buds. I've found that my containerized camellias do better in this environment than the ones on the East facing porch during the winter months.

This Euphorbia will develop a rosy tone as the months get colder.

Day 52 - Guest Container From the Nashville Antique and Garden Show

Alright, I know that these pictures are not completely blog worthy, but this container was so unique. This was at a booth at the Nashville Antique and Garden show so I have little details on how it was put together. I had to hold the camera over my head to try and get these shots of the fountain that centered this old iron planter. This is such a clever way to give double duty to an enormous planter that might need a new identity.

Day 51 - A Bowl of Beauty

Take a 5 gallon Scotch Broom Cytisus scoparius, add a few Golden Euonomous and Euonomous Wolong Ghost and about 24 pansies - blue, rose, and yellow. Add water and sunshine. The Scotch Broom is incredible in the spring full of yellow blooms.

Welcome to the Westhaven Golf Club!
